Wine

In velvet depths, a ruby glow, whispers of vineyards, tales to bestow.

Each sip journey, rich and divine, Time slows down in a glass of wine.

THE POWER OF GRAPES

Grapes are crushed to release their sugary liquid to ferment, changing the grape juice into an alcoholic beverage. The Grape has natural raw materials and unique ingredients, such as its skin and pulp, which contain most of the colour & tannin, acids, sugar & water. Under the careful attention of winemakers, it can result in a very satisfying creation of Wine.

There are over 6,000 different varieties of grapes grown around the world, but only a few dozen have been used in popularity and acclaim. We may easily find with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Petit Verdot, Grenache, Malbec, Tempranillo, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Barbera, Muscat & Riesling….

The difference between the Old World and the New World wine is due to each region's climate and ecological environment. Old World wine tends to have a lighter body, lower alcohol, higher acidity, and less fruity flavour with more minerality. New World wine tends toward a fuller body, high alcohol, lower acidity, and pronounced fruit flavours.

SPAIN

Spanish Wine Culture

Located on the Iberian Peninsula, Spain has over 2.9 million acres (over 1.17 million hectares) planted – making it the most widely planted wine-producing nation. Still it is only the third largest producer of wine in the world, the largest being Italy and France. This is due, to the very low yields and wide spacing of the old vines planted on the dry, infertile soil found in many Spanish wine regions. The country is ninth in worldwide consumption with Spanish drinking, on average, 38 litres a year. The country has an abundance of native grape varieties, with 600 varieties planted throughout Spain, though 80% of the country’s wine production is from only 20 grapes, including Tempranillo, Albarino, Grenache, Palomino, Airen, Macabeo, Parellada, Xarel.lo, Carignan and Monastrell. Major Spanish wine regions include the Rioja and Ribera del Duero, are known for their Tempranillo production; Jerez, the home of fortified Sherry wine; Rias Baixas in the northwest region of Galicia is known for its white wines made from Albarino and Catalonia which includes the Cava and still wine producing regions of Penedes as well as the Priorat.

SPAIN

Wine Classification of Spain

Vino de Mesa (VdM). These are wines that are the equivalents of most country’s table wines and are made from unclassified vineyards or grapes that have been declassified through “illegal” blending. Similar to the Italian Super Tuscans from the late 20th century, some Spanish winemakers will intentionally declassify their wines so that they have greater flexibility their wines so that they have greater flexibility in blending and winemaking methods.

  • Vinos de la Tierra (VdlT). This level is similar to France’s Vin de Pays system, normally corresponding to the larger autonomous geographical regions and will appear on the label with these broader geographical designations like Andalucia, Castilla la Mancha and Levante.
  • Vino de Calidid Producido en Region Determinada (VCPRD). This level is similar to France’s Vin Delimite de Qualite Superieure (VDQS) system and is considered a stepping stone towards D.O. status.
  • Denominacion de Origen (D.O.) This level is for the mainstream quality-wine regions which are regulated by the Consejo Regulador or who is also responsible for marketing the wines of that D.O. In 2005, nearly two thirds of the total vineyard area in Spain was within the boundaries of D.O. regions.
  • Denominacion de Origen Califocada (D.O.Ca. / DOQ). This designation which is similar to Italy’s Denominazione de Origine Controllata e Garantina (DOCG) designation, is for regions with a track record of consistent quality and is meant to be a step above D.O. level. Rioja became the first DOQ member in 1991, early followed by Priorat, which took part in this group in 2003.
  • Vinos de Pago. Special category in 2003 for single estates or vineyard that have very high standards and recognition for excellence and use only their own grapes.

RIOJA region

RIOJA is a wine region in Spain and the first of the two regions  with denominacion de origen calificada  (D.O.Ca., "Qualified Designation of Origin," the highest category in Spanish wine regulation) in 1993 and followed by Priorat achieved in 2003.

Rioja is Spain's most famous wine region known for its high-quality red wines made primarily from the Tempranillo grape. These wines are often aged in oak barrels, giving them a distinctive flavour profile characterized by vanilla, spice, and red fruit notes.

Spanish wines are known for their bold flavours and unique characteristics, making them a favourite among wine connoisseurs worldwide.  Wines are intensely bold with high tannin, black plum, chocolate, and black pepper flavours.

La Rioja lies in the north of the country, surrounded by the Basque Country, Aragón, Navarra and Castilla y León. There has 673 wineries, is the biggest and best wine destination.  The region produces 280 to 300 million litres of wine per year and comprises approximately 63,593 hectares of vineyards. It’s here where you can sample the best of the country’s reds at some of the top wineries.
